Youth Small Things Casting

Do you have an idea for a small-scale sculpture or jewelry piece that you'd like to make in cast silver or bronze? Dive into the world of lost wax casting in miniature form. The lost wax process starts with carving/forming a pattern out of wax, molding the pattern, and then melting the wax out of the mold to create a hollow vessel into which you'll pour molten metal. You'll be able to cast small art objects (things you can fit in your hand) or jewelry pieces using centrifugal and vacuum assist casting equipment. We'll cover safety protocols, the tools and techniques for carving and pouring, and basic finishing and patination of our cast artwork.

Mondays, 10/4/21-12/6/21 , 2-5pm

This course will turn you into a molten metal lover (if you're not one already!) as we explore the fundamentals of creating cast metal sculpture through mold-making, pouring metal, and finishing techniques. You will begin by learning traditional cuttlebone mold making and move into more contemporary sand molding and ceramic shell. We will cast with lead-free pewter, aluminum, and bronze and you can expect to complete three separate castings. You'll leave the class with basic skills and knowledge in the processes of lost wax, direct carve or pattern based mold making. You will have an understanding of foundry safety, pouring metal, chasing, and finishing.

We at Chicago Avenue Fire Arts Center (CAFAC) were honored to have the chance to fabricate part of this work for the much respected and wonderful, Seitu Jones. I personally was able to fabricate the hands from Seitu’s pattern. Come celebrate with us!

The City of Minneapolis, the Minnesota Department of Transportation and the Kingfield Neighborhood Association are hosting a celebration on Saturday, October 9 at 10 am for Neighborhood Embrace, an artwork by Seitu Jones, spanning the 40th Street Pedestrian Bridge, by Seitu Jones.

The artwork features a steel railing and Adinkra symbols and cast bronze hands. It speaks to the history of the community, and the hundreds of low-income and minority families who were displaced to make way for highways both here in the Twin Cities and across the U.S.

The celebration will on the west side of the bridge at the intersection of Stevens Avenue and 40th Street South. Due to construction in the area of Nicollet and 40th Street, it is recommended people travel to the site from 39th to 1st Avenue or cross the bridge from the entrance on 2nd Avenue South.
